IOM with Altai Consulting today launch “Migration Trends across the Mediterranean: Connecting the Dots”.

Based on unique and in-depth qualitative research in countries along the Western and Central Mediterranean routes, the study adds new insights to the ongoing debate over migration across the Mediterranean.

Amongst its key finding is that not all migrants intend to go to Europe: many have migrated within their region first and moved on, sometimes years later, after being unable to find the stability, safety, and opportunities they hoped for.

Tue, 06/23/2015 - 07:24
Meet IOM driver Nir Kumar Bhandari from Birtamode, Jhapa. He's been serving the Bhutanese refugee population since 1991 when they first came, both with an International Non-Government Organization from the UK and now with IOM.

"I got an opportunity to join IOM where I have been working since 2008 as a driver. Here I assist many refugees departing for resettlement in third countries. I drive many refugees in buses from camps for resettlement activities. It is wonderful to see refugees proceed through every step of the process, from initial interviews at IOM to driving them to the airport to open a new door in their life", he shares.

Fri, 06/19/2015 - 05:14
IOM Director General William Lacy Swing urged authorities in the #DominicanRepublic this week to extend the period of registration to regularize their migration status under what is known as General Migration Law 285-04.

“Too many of those concerned face serious difficulty in securing documents in the country, and thus need extra time and assistance to make their applications. We appeal to the authorities to continue to work with those subject to the General Migration Law and their employers beyond the Regularization Plan deadline," Ambassador Swing said. Large scale deportations must be avoided, he added.

Thu, 06/11/2015 - 10:00
IOM is to launch new projects to help vulnerable, conflict-affected people in #Ukraine’s Donbas region and others forcibly displaced from the area by clashes between government and separatist forces.

The initiative will target the immediate and long term needs of vulnerable internally displaced persons (IDPs) and affected communities.

“IDPs now fleeing the conflict have different needs from those who left their homes a year ago. Those staying in the East face different realities than those already in western areas. We have to take this into account and meet people’s immediate and longer term needs to help them restart their lives. This new donor support will help us to do that,” said IOM Ukraine Chief of Mission Manfred Profazi.
