Salma was born in Somaliland but left her country 19 years ago for Canada. She created a new life for herself and trained as a mental health counselor but always yearned to help rebuild her country of origin and “give back”. IOM gave her the opportunity to do just that.

Thanks to IOM and its partners, she went back to Somalia to temporarily work as a counseling psychologist. In Somalia, years of violence left many families traumatized. Salma directly worked with many patients but also trained 12 nurses and university students to reinforce the limited pool of specialists in the country.

It's a long journey from Somaliland to Europe.

Disenchanted, uninspired and idle, many young graduates are paying large smuggling fees to find work in Europe.

So why are people still leaving? “Because it is worth the risk. Many students feel there is no other option because they have no future in Somaliland. They have studied; they have worked hard, for what?”

Being an aid worker can be a rewarding, but also challenging activity.

In this video, we explain what it is like to be a humanitarian aid worker, the difficulties faced and what inspires us every day to continue helping others. http://ow.ly/o6y6O

World Humanitarian Day:
In his eight years working with IOM, Assistant Operations Coordinator Daniel Matur has helped coordinate large-scale movements of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), refugees and returnees; delivered relief items to families displaced by conflict and natural disaster; and provided water, sanitation and hygiene assistance for vulnerable communities.

"The most important part of my job is the impact that we as aid workers have on our beneficiaries. I am always happy when the beneficiaries we serve have their lives changed for the better" Daniel says. "As a war victim who has grown from my refugee status to do this important job, I am inspired to help others achieve the same thing."
