In June, IOM Germany organized the donation of 3,000 reusable protective face masks to unaccompanied migrant children in Greece amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The masks were donated by the German entities Planet Bamboo, The African Network in Germany (TANG e.V.) and the Federal Association for Economic Development and Foreign Trade. The cooperation with TANG, the largest umbrella organization for African Diaspora associations in Germany, resulted from four joint virtual information sessions on the COVID-19 outbreak and applicable measures. The sessions focused on the medical aspects of the pandemic, including prevention and control measures in migrant accommodation centres, as well as mental health and psycho-social support. In total, more than 150 diaspora community leaders from different locations in Germany attended the info sessions. The participants deemed the information very valuable for their daily work with African migrants and refugees in Germany, who have been concerned with receiving accurate information on COVID-19 and appropriate measures. Inspired by IOM’s briefing series, various diaspora organizations organized their own information sessions to pass on their newly gained insights to their communities.
