Our Work
Our WorkAs the leading inter-governmental organization promoting since 1951 humane and orderly migration, IOM plays a key role to support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through different areas of intervention that connect both humanitarian assistance and sustainable development. In Germany, IOM implements projects mainly in the areas of migrant protection and assistance, as well as advocating for migrants’ rights and serving as a liaison office for German funded IOM activities worldwide.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) offers personal return counselling to migrants interested in voluntary returns in Berlin, Rhineland-Palatinate and Bremerhaven. The purpose of the return counselling is to help migrants understand their individual options and make an informed decision. Here, great importance is placed on individual unbiased counselling.
What happens during return counselling?
- Individual assessment
- Identifying and responding to vulnerable situations
- Providing up-to-date information on the countries of origin
- Referral counselling
- Reintegration counselling
- Organisation and support for return and reintegration
IOM Counselling is based on the following principles:
- Migrant-oriented and rights-based counselling
- Respect of self-determination
- Protection and dignity of returnees
- Do no harm principle
- Confidentiality and accountability
- Sustainability of reintegration
The IOM counselling centre for the state of Berlin has existed since 2006 and is located in the Berlin Immigration Office (LEA). Since 2020, those interested in returning from Germany have also been able to receive counselling from the IOM in Rhineland-Palatinate and Bremerhaven.

In addition to the counselling in the IOM counselling centres in Rhineland-Palatinate, the IOM offers mobile counselling throughout Rhineland-Palatinate.
The information and return counselling centres are funded by the EU's Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) as well as the Berlin Senate Department for the Interior and Sport and the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry for Family Affairs, Women, Culture and Integration.
